Publishing Review for 2014

Wickedly Misunderstood: Valhaven Island Trilogy Book 1 by Chasity Nicole

Valhaven Island is a strange island located in the middle of absolutely nowhere. The island is completely ran by robots, and the only inhabitants are eight young adults, and the two adults that brought them here (Jun and Mr. Snake). Both are very shady individuals, but they are not the only shady people on the island. There’s me, Ember, the fiery hot-head (literally), Elecktra the eccentric bubbly one (and her own light source), Harleigh the promiscuous one, Thirteen the energetic child (or monkey we have yet to figure that out), and that’s only the girls. Of the boy’s, Blade is seriously mysterious and no one likes him, Sage thinks he’s all that, Dante the with-drawn emo kid (but he’s really, really reliable, he saved my life), and Kai the super-genius, or super annoying smarty-pants depending on how you take what comes out of his mouth. To sum everything up, someone has two-near death experiences, a few fall in-love, one is the Devil’s son (yep that’s right we live on an uncharted island with the Spawn of Satan), someone is kidnapped by the Devil and dragged to Hell. And to make the situation all the more awesome, three new teens arrive and one is a purple-dragon girl. Seriously she’s freaking purple, and can turn into a dragon, how flipping awesome is that!

Darkly Never After: The Lost Fairy

download (1)

Darkness. The absence of light, hope, and direction. It is a word that is as pervasive in our language as its consequence is on society. A shot in the dark. To be in the dark. The darkest hour is before dawn. Darkness is the foil for all we consider good in the world––the natural enemy of good, and the virtues of the human spirit. Peter Benenson once said that it was better to light a candle than curse the darkness. Darkly Never After, a diverse collection of dark fairy tales and fiction, chooses to light the world with its very mission statement. All proceeds from this international volume will benefit children in need. From classical reimaginings of old classics, to brand new tales of adventure and deceit, Darkly Never After has fairy tales for the sophisticated and worldly mind. Visit the fantastical worlds your childhood books introduced you to, with a touch of maturity for the older reader. Light a path in the darkness. Become the candle.

Sins of the Past: A Ghostly Haunting

Why I’ve Been MIA

I know I haven’t posted all too many blogs here lately but things in my life got super busy. I’ve had little time to write even, which I’m slowly making the time for now. This blog is just to let you know that I’m still here, and I’m still writing, I’ve just added a few extra things into my daily life that have made things a bit chaotic at best. Here’s what’s been going on.

On March 13, 2014, I got engaged to the greatest guy I could ever have asked for. He is my other half, and actually the male version of myself. Except he’s a gamer and I’m more of a reader.

A few weeks ago I started working on Author Misti Blake’s book cover for her upcoming novel. The book cover is still in progress as there are several things that need to be moved and re-edited on the cover. Awesome book covers don’t happen in a day, sadly.

My mom decided to start helping the Southern Breeze Band with some promotional stuff, and I joined in and started helping her with some really cool graphics. I love doing these sort of things. Graphics help when I’m having mega writer’s block, so it’s a win-win in my book.

I’ve also decided to really start making book covers for other authors, and me and my mom are in the process of drafting up a website for promotional purposes. For photography, book covers, and band promotions, plus graphic art. This is still also a start process so it will take some time before I share the link to a website.

Lastly, Sins of the Past, is nearing a publishing stage as we are creating awesome banners for each of our stories and working on everything else that needs to happen before a publication. All the background stuff that most readers never see, but it is a vital process in making sure the book is known before it’s release and that we have everything ready to have an awesome book out there for the readers. And trust me, it is an awesome book, each story is amazing and each one is scarier than the next.

I’ll post periodic updates on the band, promotion website, Misti’s book cover, and Sins of the Past, as things progress or a published version is ready. But this gives you a look into my life over the last few months 🙂

The Flavors of a Good Ghost Story

The Flavors of a Good Ghost Story

By Dreaming Novelist Laura K. Cowan

Guest Post for Chasity Nicole

April 21, 2014

“Not All Ghost Stories Are Sad.” That’s the line I have used to introduce people to my upcoming literary supernatural novel, Music of Sacred Lakes [ http://www.amazon.com/Music-Sacred-Lakes-Laura-Cowan/dp/1494711427/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390140902&sr=8-1&keywords=music+of+sacred+lakes ] , in which a young man is helped to a discovery of his place of belonging in the world by the spirit of a girl he accidentally killed. There was a time when I thought all ghost stories were the same. But if you dive into the supernatural genre, particularly the YA flavor my fellow author Chasity Nicole writes so well, or the spiritual end that is my playground, you find a much richer genre.

“A beautiful young girl with a free spirit, so I’m told. Let’s see if we can break that spirit. I’m Miss Elleanora.” So begins Chasity’s story of Miss Elleanora’s Boarding School of Buried Dreams, in which children who misbehave are fed to a mysterious monster beneath the school. From this story to her haunting tales in the upcoming Sins of the Past historical horror anthology and Shades of Fear [change title if anthology name changes] in which we are both taking part, you can see how Chasity balances the frightening and the humorous, the human spirit and the things that try to suck it dry from the hereafter.

My stories? Well, they’re pretty strange as well. In Music of Sacred Lakes [ http://www.amazon.com/Music-Sacred-Lakes-Laura-Cowan/dp/1494711427/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390140902&sr=8-1&keywords=music+of+sacred+lakes ] the protagonist Peter is pursued by strange images and sounds that haunt him through his waking and sleeping hours. The spirit of the girl he killed rises out of Lake Michigan under the Northern Lights and tries to help him understand something very important about the world around him and his place in it. And ultimately, it is the lake itself he hears whispering this truth to him when he finally finds an inner silence and gives up his will to die. But this story is so far afield from the standard ghost story that you might not even be sure that that’s what it is. I’m not even sure that that’s what it is! I love to write stories that are on a fringe like Chasity’s, where even I’m not quite sure how to explain them. I think that’s the key to a really good ghost story. It leaves you feeling a bit haunted, not quite with all the answers, but with some very interesting questions and an unforgettable experience. Who needs all the answers, anyway?
